Duke went deep on the final day of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, hosted by Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils fired a closing team total of 17 under par (271), seven better than any other score of the week, to claim their first win in the event since 2019 and deliver a 33rd tournament victory for Head Coach Jamie Green.
Ethan Evans (below) made it a one-two for Duke by winning his first individual collegiate title on nine under par, one shot better than 36-hole leader Caden Baker of Charlotte and a duo from Virginia, Bryan Lee and Josh Duangmanee.
The Duke junior was joined by two teammates in the top-10, Kelly Chin (T5, -7), who finished with a fine 66, and Bryan Kim (9th, -6). Chin got to eight under par after 13 holes of his third round but two late bogeys halted his charge.
Evans recorded four top-five finishes last season, including a second place at the Baton Rouge Regional. At GC of Georgia he fired rounds of 67-69-71 to take the prize. ‘I had a lot to prove to myself after a rough event at Notre Dame [where he finished 74th],’ he told the GoDuke.com website.
‘Shooting a low first round was a big relief and from there, I just let myself play golf and enjoy the moment. Nerves were high coming down the last hole but happy with how I executed the shots.’
UCLA, #39 in the first National Collegiate Golf Rankings of the season, came in second on 25 under par, three shots behind Duke. First round leaders Virginia, the field’s highest ranked team at #7, was third on 19 under.
