Frequently Asked Questions

A.
The original proposal to the NCAA was for an OWGR-like system because we assumed that's what college golf and college coaches wanted. The OWGR system is very much like the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) system, and the original system for the new college golf rankings was designed in the same spirit. After talking to coaches and the NCAA, however, there was a strong preference for including stroke differential and for including positive points for all finish positions. This led to the change to the current Strokes Gained To Points ranking system. This system allows for stroke differential, a modest premium for better finishes and positive points for all finish positions. The result is a better and more accurate ranking system, more closely in line with what coaches wanted.
