The Fall season saw 16 teams qualify for the NCAA Division III Golf Championships. On the men’s side, nine teams are through, while seven women’s teams booked their place.
Salem State University and Farmingdale State College were the first men’s teams to punch their tickets, finishing first at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and the Skyline Conference Championship respectively.
At the latter, staged at Bethpage State Park Golf Course, Farmingdale State (above) won by 48 shots. Its final tally of 582 (+22) included a program record 283 (+3) in the second round. The Rams’ five players occupied the top-5 positions with sophomore CJ Merritt (main image) claiming the individual title for the second consecutive year.
In early October, Southern Maine won the Little East Conference Championship in New Hampshire, coming through by three shots.
A day later, North Central confirmed its place with a two-stroke victory at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Championship in Minnesota, a wire-to-wire win that delivered a first UMAC Championship since 2012. All five NCU players finished in the top 12, earning all-conference honors. They were led by four-time first team Jake Sweeney.
It’s the first time that Carleton College has won the MIAC Conference Championship
It was Carleton College’s turn next. A final round of three under par secured an historic 18-shot victory at the MIAC Championship. It’s the first time that Carleton College has won the MIAC Conference Championship and guarantees the school’s debut appearance at the NCAA DIII Men's Golf Championships.
Carleton had four players in the top-11, led by medalist Ryan Choi. He was joined by Sam Higaki, who finished 3rd after shooting a closing 67, which included a hole in one. Justin Rodriguez and Gordon Walker finished T11 for Coach Sloan Wallgreen’s history makers.
Later in the month, Husson University won the North Atlantic Conference title, while tournament hosts New England College (above) confirmed its place with a sixth victory of the fall season at the GMAC Championship in Concord CC, New Hampshire.
Penn State Altoona took down the AMCC Championship by 27 shots, making it four consecutive AMCC Championship victories. Junior Peter Nusbaum made it four consecutive individual AMCC Champions for the Lions, too, as all five players placed inside the top-8, including three in the top-four.
Nusbaum made four back nine birdies at Butler Country Club to win by five shots
Nusbaum, a two-time AMCC Player of the Year, shot a closing four-under 67 to secure a come from behind win. He began the day five shots adrift but made four back nine birdies at Butler Country Club to win by five shots. His 67 tied his own school record.
The final DIII men’s team to qualify in the Fall season was Roger Williams University who secured a narrow two-shot win at the Conference of New England Championship at the historic Tedesco CC in Massachusetts, sealing back to back conference championships. Ryan Dacey was the individual medalist after finishing runner-up in 2023
For DIII women, seven teams have won through thus far. Dubuque booked its place with a seven-shot win at the American Rivers Conference Championship in Iowa.
Illinois Wesleyan, which finished T6 behind Carnegie Mellon in May and is currently ranked #16, ran away from the field at the CCIW Conference Championship at Metamora in Illinois, while St Catherine (#9) won its fifth successive tournament of the fall at the MIAC Championship at St Cloud CC in Minnesota.
Elsewhere, Aurora’s women took down the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championship title by a distance, Northwestern-St Paul claimed the UMAC Championship, Grinnell College bagged its third win in four fall season events with victory at the SLIAC Championship, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater came out on top at the WIAC Championship in Wisconsin.
