Mississippi State sophomore Avery Weed equalled the NCAA record for lowest single round to par when she opened up in her school’s home tournament, The Ally, with an 11-under 61 at Old Waverly Golf Club.
Weed joined four other players in the college golf record books who have finished this far under par in a single round, and six other female players to have shot a 61.
The Mississippian from Ocean Springs now owns the lowest round by a woman in Bulldogs history and owns a share of the second lowest round by a woman in NCAA history.
Only Lauren Olivares from NC State has gone lower, last year firing a 60 on a par-71 at the Cougar Classic, a round that contained no less than 13 birdies.
Weed began her round with a birdie on the short par-4 1st, made an eagle on the par-5 2nd and then claimed another birdie on the 4th.
A second eagle on the par-5th 9th was followed immediately by another on the long 10th at which point she stood eight under after 10 holes.
She continued with her foot to the floor on the second nine, making further birdies on holes 12, 14 and 15. By the end of the day, she had a seven-shot lead.
Last month, Weed won the first college title of her career at The Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship where she opened with a 65, bettering her previous best college round by two.
This season, she has not finished worse than 11th in three tournaments and was at #18 in the first National Collegiate Golf Ranking of the season.
