DI Women: TCU rolls to third W of season

TCU claimed its third victory of the season by taking the Chevron Collegiate at Golf Club of Houston. The Horned Frogs finished 34 under par to win by nine strokes over Texas A&M and 10 over #1 ranked Arkansas.

Now ranked 13, TCU set new program records for low tournament total (830) and low-54 hole score versus par in delivering the 21st team victory of Head Coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin’s tenure.

This was their sixth straight top-five finish and, as the TCU website reported, Texas Christian is now the only Big 12 team with three team wins this season.

Vanessa Borovilos (above) of Texas A&M went bogey-free for 54 holes to earn her first collegiate victory on 15 under par. The freshman, who was picked as a Golf Channel Preseason Honorable Mention All-American, is currently on a 74-hole bogey-free streak that dates back to the Moon Golf Invitational. Her 54-hole total (67-67-67, 201) was the second lowest in program history.

TCU’s Camille Min-Gaultier was runner-up, two shots behind after firing a seven-under 65 in the final round, with teammate Sofia Barroso Sá tied for third (-10, 206).

DI Men: San Diego doubles up to delight new coach

San Diego went back to back this week to deliver wins two and three of the season for new Head Coach Evan Emerick.

First, the Toreros beat a host of top-50 teams to claim The Prestige on the Norman Course at PGA West in Palm Springs. They then backed it up with victory at the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno to move up to 35 in the rankings.

At La Quinta, USD sophomore Ryan Abuan (above) fired 15 birdies and two eagles in rounds of 68, 69 and 65 (11 under) to win the individual title by three shots. His teammates Ian Maspat and Cooper Humphreys also finished inside the top 10 as San Diego eased clear of the field to win by 16 from Texas Tech.

DI Women: Kansas chalk up win No.5

Kansas successfully defended its title at the Westbrook Invitational in style, bagging win number five of the season for Coach Lindsay Kuhle. The Jayhawks’ team score of 825 (-39) was the second-lowest team 54-hole total in program history and they move to #23 in the rankings.

Senior Lauren Clark (below) went bogey-free to win her second consecutive individual title and set a new program record for 54-hole individual score on 199 (-17).

“Lauren’s five under [final round] for her to win two tournaments in a row is remarkable,” Coach Kuhle told KUAthletics.com. “She’s probably one of the best college golfers in the country right now with the way she’s playing.” The last time Clark finished outside the top 10 was back in October.

UNLV was second, nine shots back (-30), with Kansas State (-24) in third. Hosts Wisconsin came in fifth.

DI Women: UCLA off the mark at Bruin Wave Invitational

UCLA, last year’s runners-up to Stanford in the National Championship Match at La Costa, notched a first win of the season at its home event, romping home by 22 strokes over Baylor at Valencia Country Club.

Bruin freshman Francesca Fiorellini (below) moves up to 17 in the rankings after sealing an emphatic first collegiate victory. Her nine-under-par total of 207 was 10 shots better than fellow UCLA player Tiffany Le, who was competing as an individual, and 11 clear of teammate Angela Liu.

UCLA has struggled to get going this season after losing two quality players in Zoe Campos and Caroline Canales, who both recently turned pro.

As Head Coach Alicia Um Holmes told UCLAbruins.com: “To have them bounce back and respond in this fashion is huge for our team’s morale. We’ve got a talented bunch, and they’re starting to believe more in their abilities.”
