Five teams shot sub-300 team rounds today during the first round of the 72nd Annual NAIA Men's Golf National Championship at Dalton Golf and Country Club.
Keiser (Fla.) leads the jammed-pack leaderboard following a team-total 3-over par 291. Fellow Sun Conference member St. Thomas (Fla.) sits just a single stroke back at 292 in the 30-team field. Tournament host Dalton State (Ga.) and Texas Wesleyan are tied for third with 295's, while British Columbia rounds out the top five with a 299.
All five teams played in the morning session. Tee times flip on Wednesday for the tournament's second round. The top two teams after the opening round produced the top two individuals on the day.
Keiser's Isac Wallin and St. Thomas' Tomas Borquez each carded 2-under par 70s to lead the 156-man field. Nine individuals posted sub-par rounds over the 7,043 yards, par-72 layout, including seven players who ended rounds of 1-under par 71.
A round-high six birdies highlighted Borquez's round, while Wallin carded three birdies, 14 pars, and just one blemish (bogey) during his opening round. Forty-two golfers are within five strokes of the lead with 54 holes to play in the championship.
