Purdue deliver first landmark win for Coach Sapp... UNLV and Utah tie at John A. Burns Invitational... Reigning national champions Stanford show their class... OK State finish on top in Hawaii birdie fest

DI Men: Purdue upset the odds with clean sweep in Puerto Rico

Purdue made history by becoming the first northern school in 32 years to win the Puerto Rico Classic. The Boilermakers finished 39 under par to eclipse #1 Ole Miss by six shots.

Sophomore Sam Easterbrook made it a clean sweep for the hosts by claiming the first win of his collegiate career with a 15-under par 201. His flawless final round of 65 (-7) left him one shot ahead of teammate Kent Hsiao who made just one bogey in 54 holes.

“I am so proud of the guys this week,” said first year Head Coach Andrew Sapp, whose Purdue team was ranked #51 coming into the event. Purdue beat nine teams ranked above them, including four inside the top-10 to deliver the first big win of Sapp’s tenure and the second victory of the season after claiming the Island Resort Intercollegiate in September.

“This is just a huge win for the program,” said Sapp, “and to see both Sam and Kent battle for the individual trophy made the team win even sweeter.” South Carolina came in third while LSU finished strongly to take fourth place. LSU freshman Arni Sveinsson added to his growing reputation by coming in third.

DI Men: Utah and UNLV share the spoils in Hawaii

In a dramatic ending, UNLV and Utah were crowned as co-champions of both the team and individual competitions in the 2025 John A. Burns Intercollegiate along the oceanfront of Kaua‘i.

Coach Jean-Paul Hebert’s UNLV team (below) erased the painful memories of relinquishing a final day lead at the Southwestern Invitational to make up a six-shot deficit in the last round. Their comeback tied the Utes at 22-under.

“Today, we came out with determination and focus,” said Coach Hebert after watching his side go 14 under in the last round. “That’s what all five guys did.”

Santa Clara finished in third on 10 under, with Long Beach State in third five shots further back (-5). San Diego State, Illinois and Texas A&M finished in a three-way tie for fifth.

Utah (above), winners of the Palouse Collegiate and The Tindall in the Fall season, led by seven shots after day one. “After leading both days, it felt like everything had slipped away,” said Head Coach Garrett Clegg. “All of a sudden, we made four birdies at the very end to regain a share of the lead. It’s a testament to our players’ resilience.”

Two sophomores — one from England and the other from Guatemala — shared the spoils in the individual competition. UNLV’s Zach Little and Utah’s Gabriel Palacios finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament tied at 11-under (199) after both shooting 65 in the final round.

DI Women: Ortengren shows her class as Stanford dominate

Stanford picked up where they left off with a dominant display to win the San Diego State Classic for the first time in program history. Cardinal’s 31-under-par winning total was 32 shots better than nearest rivals UNLV and secured a fourth team victory of the season.

Stanford freshman Meja Ortengren (below) equalled a program record with a 10-under-par 62 in the second round, which put clear daylight between her and the field. Mariah Stackhouse is the only other Stanford woman golfer to go 10 under for a single round, a feat she achieved in 2013.

Ortengren’s 14-under-par total thru 36 holes was the lowest ever to par by a member of the Stanford women’s team.

The Swedish player went on to wrap her first collegiate win at 15 under par, eight shots clear of teammate Paula Martin Sampedro. Her winning margin set another program record. Megha Ganne and Kelly Xu of Stanford also finished inside the top six.

DI Men: OK State on top in Hawaii birdie blitz

Records fell everywhere at the Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii as Oklahoma State set a new 54-hole scoring record to win by five shots over UNC. The Cowboys shot a 64-under-par 800 to lower the mark their predecessors set at the same tournament in 2005 and move up two places in the rankings to 7th.

OSU started as they meant to go on by opening with a record single round score of 26 under par to lead by two from ASU. Coach Alan Bratton’s men then went wire-to-wire to claim their 10th Amer Ari title and second win in a row following victory in the Jackson T. Stephens Cup to close the Fall.

OK State’s Ethan Fang has not finished outside the top 10 this season and the sophomore continued his fine run of form with a top-3 finish at 18 under par. He was joined in the top-10 by teammate Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson. The freshman closed with a 66 to finish T7. Three Cowboys finished double digits under par.

The individual tournament was won on the first extra hole by the 2024 British Amateur Champion Tommy Morrison of Texas. The 6ft 9in Longhorns standout claimed his first collegiate title with birdies on eight of his first 11 holes in the final round, which saw him card a 63. He moves up seven places to fourth in the rankings

Morrison clipped North Carolina sophomore Hampton Roberts, whose best previous finish was T12, in the playoff. Roberts was ranked 90 coming into the event but now stands at 30.
