Background and history
The tournament will be held at the Golf Club of Houston, previously Redstone Golf Club. A Rees Jones design that hosted the Houston Open between 2003-20 with winners including Adam Scott, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson.
Last year’s event was won by Texas Christian University with a sublime score of -34 to beat Texas A&M by nine shots. With that victory, the Horned Frogs set new program records for low tournament total (830) and low-54 hole score versus par.
Their final round -15 was the best of the day, led by Camille Min-Gautier who had a phenomenal 65 and set the tone for the rest of the team to follow.
A strong field set to compete
Positioned at the start of the spring season, the Chevron Collegiate is an early marker as to which teams have returned from the winter break and are pushing for the post season.
Two of this year’s competing teams, Arkansas and Oregon, finished in the top-8 of last year’s National Strokeplay Championship, with Oregon making it to the semifinals before losing to eventual champions, Northwestern.
Heading into the event, Arkansas and Oregon are the two highest ranked, competing teams. Oregon, currently ranked #3 are playing their second event of the spring season after a 5th place finish at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge. Arkansas, the 4th ranked team in the country, are in fine form after a victory at the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic at the start of February, where they finished six shots ahead of second place.
Players to watch
The field of players is led by the current #1 ranked, Avery Weed of Mississippi State. Avery won the prestigious Blessings Collegiate during the fall season and hasn’t finished outside the top-5 all year. Her most recent tournament, the 2026 UCF Challenge at the end of January, saw her finish in 2nd place, one shot behind the winner.
Plenty of eyes will be on 2024/25 Individual National Champion winner, Maria Jose Marin of Arkansas (#2) and Oregon’s Kiara Romero (#4) who will be teeing it up for their respective teams. Both players have finished in the top-3 in 50%+ of the events that’ve played in this season and both have an adjusted scoring average of below 68 this season.
Camille Min-Gautier returns to the Golf Club of Houston, where she had the tournament low round last year, fresh off a T2 finish at the Collegiate Invitational. Who’s to say she can’t repeat that fantastic round of 65 this year?
